If you’re looking for the right Mother’s Day gift for your mom to show her how much you appreciate her, why not think outside the box and find classes and courses for her to take in things she loves, or maybe things she’s never tried before? Whether you have a sporty mom, a crafty mom or a mom who loves the outdoors, you’ll love the ideas we’ve listed below and she will too.
Beginning Climbing Classes
My mom is always on the go. Sometimes she makes me feel like I’M the one who is older! One thing I’m considering doing with her is a beginning climbing class at Just Climb! I think I may regret my decision when she is scaling walls faster than I am but I think she will love it.
This is a beginner’s class for people who have never climbed before and it will teach you all of the basics such as climbing warm ups, bouldering safety rules, climbing shoe usage, how to fall correctly (I may need this one more than she will!) and a few other great topics. The class is an hour long and they have a lot of spots open several days a week.
There are very few things that mom will need to do before the class such as arrive 15 minutes early, tie up her hair, make sure her fingernails aren’t too long and wearing the right sportswear and shoes, which I got her for a gift as well. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I think she would love it. I know she’ll have such a great time. Maybe YOUR mom would like it too! Just Climb +852 3561 7868 HK$268/person
Learn How to Create things with Leather
Another thing my mom absolutely loves to do is make things. She is an avid crafter and love knitting, scrapbooking and all kinds of crafty type stuff. She loves leather, and I found this excellent leather case class that teaches people to make leather cases for an Octopus card, and iPhone or to make business card holders. Since she has an iPhone, I thought she would love the idea of making her own iPhone case.
The classes are 3.5 hours long and if you really love the class and want to take more, they offer you a $200 discount if you schedule more classes where they will teach more advanced items like a wallet or bag. Classes are scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. Butcher Lab 5/F, Easy Package Industrial Bldg, 140 Wai Yip St, Kwun Tong, 3421 0212.
Tour the Villages of the New Territories
If your mom loves being outdoors there are a ton of things that you can do to enjoy the outdoors together. One of the best things I’ve found are the guided tours that Countryside Hikes offers. She and I share a love for old abandoned houses and towns, so we’re going to go on their Ghost Villages of the New Territories walking tour. It really looks amazing and for anyone who is looking for ways to be outside and active, it doesn’t get much better than this!
The tour starts at 9:00 a.m. in the morning and goes until 5:00 p.m. and covers everything from Yung Shue Au to the Devil’s fist. The total hike is 13km (8.07 miles) and for the most of the tour you’ll be using well maintained dirt footpaths. A late lunch will be provided and it is recommended that tour participants bring snacks. It’s also important to bring plenty of water since that is not really available for about 4 hours from the start of the tour. Countryside Hikes HKD: 350 per person including the taxi from Fanling MTR to Luk Keng and the boat portion as well.
